The topic of how to use the revision pinning capability came up recently and although Gavin touched on it in Are you Affected by Effectivity, I figured it was worth revisiting. This new feature was rolled out in April along with many other BOM Improvements (link to our recent webinar covering them – we ran out of time to talk about pinning, hence this post).
You can pin a particular component of a subassembly within a specific bill of material so that only that revision is used in that bill of material even if it’s not that latest. This will override any date effectivity. One use case for this ability is if an issue if found with a part in production, you can revert back to using a prior version until that issue is isolated and resolved. You do this on the bill of materials tab:
For the component you want to pin, select the revision to use and pin it. Now when you view the BOM tab, you see which revision to use and you can then unpin when the problem is corrected.
Hope that helps!
